Being a phD student means you are going to embark on a whole new thing in your personal life as well as your academic life.You have to be prepared, really prepared. One way to prepare yourself is to read about it, and i found these books to be very good.
I personally recommend these books for those who want to do their phD or for those who are already doing their phD, it doesn't hurt to read these books.
Basically these books tell you about what is phD and what is going on during phD study. Anyway, one of the points that I found very enlightening is that phD is just a training ground to be a researcher. Having passed a phD viva-voce /dessertation submission just means that you are now eligible enough to carry out your own research in a prefessional manner.
Anyway, the second book is quite fun to read. I laugh a lot :D
